| The Mission...
The Alabama Birmingham Mission covers the upper 2/3 of Alabama. It also
includes the northeast corner of Mississippi, and part of central southern Tennessee.
The larger cities include Birmingham AL, Tuscaloosa AL, Hunstville AL, and
Montgomery AL. There are almost as many areas outside of the big cities
as there are in the big cities, and so your chances of serving in small towns
are pretty good.
The landscape is mostly rolling hills and green foliage.
The mountains in northeast Alabama are up to 1,000 feet high.
You will find a green, large leafed plant called "kudzu" covering a
majority of the state.
President Holzapfel (2010-2013) and his wife kept a wonderful web blog of the
affairs of the mission while they served in Alabama. Read over the entries in
this blog to get a better idea of what mission life in Alabama will be like. The
Holzapfel Family and Friends Alabama Birmingham Mission Blog can be found at
The Huntsville Alabama Stake has also created a blog to chronicle life as an Alabama
Birmingham Missionary. They work closely with the current mission presidency and others
currently serving to keep the blog up to date. The Alabama Birmingham Mission Blog

| The Weather...
Depending on the time of year that you arrive in Alabama, you will be overcome
by the humidity when you arrive (especially after leaving the dry climate of Utah).
Hot, humid days are mixed with wet, rainy days through the summer.
During the winter, the coldest days are made even more penetrating by the humidity.
Overall, however, the weather is fairly mild (I spent one Christmas riding
my bike around with only a short-sleeved shirt and no jacket).
| The Transportation...
Because many of the areas in Alabama are in rural, small town settings, there are
a number of cars in the mission. Even in the big cities, many of the areas have
access to a car at least half of the time. Missionaries also get around on
bicycle, public transportation, and member rides.
When transferring from one area to another, you can usually count on a carpool
to get to your new area.
| The Accommodations...
Most missionaries live in one or two bedroom apartments. Sometimes, two
companionships will share an apartment. Most apartments have laundry hook-ups,
but for those that do not, the missionaries do their laundry at the nearest laundromat.
Missionaries can also be hosted by a member family. When living with a
member family, they share the bathrooms, laundry, refrigerator, pantry, etc. with
the host family. Hosting missionaries brings tremendous blessings.
| The Mission Office...
